Our Story
The history of the farm goes all the way back to 1901,
when Nancy’s great grand father and great grandmother I.B. & Mary Elizabeth Cauble moved to Elbow. Their original home place is located 1 mile east of the farm. I.B and Mary Elizabeth had 8 children including Nancy’s grandmother Stella. Stella married B.F. Petty and they had Bennett and Wanda. Bennett was Nancy’s dad and a true entrepreneur! He established the irrigation and all the farming on the place. Bennett and Betty had Nancy in 1976 and she grew up in the alfalfa fields! Some of her earliest memories are riding on a tractor with her mom.
When Nancy met Hugh it was a match made in hay heaven!
Hugh’s uncle had been involved in hay farming and Hugh and his dad use to come out and by alfalfa from Nancy’s mom and dad! Not to say there were not some tough rows for the young married couple to overcome to start hay farming on their own but eventually they were able to build and expand on what their forefathers had laid the groundwork for them.
Hugh and Nancy went on to have two daughters,
Samantha Raney and Gracie Raney. Both girls are involved in the hay business. Sam does all the marketing and graphic design for the farm and Gracie helps drive hay trucks. We always say what does not kill us makes us stronger and it’s very true of the farming life. We have lived through drought, lawsuits, and bought back what was sold off, but in the end we have a strong family bond and endless faith toward the future.
